Celia Barlow MP commits to beating cancer

Hove MP Celia Barlow has joined the Commit To Beat Cancer campaign at a major Cancer Research UK event in Parliament this week.

During the event she discussed the importance of keeping cancer high on the political agenda. The Labour MP said: "One in three people can expect a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Outcomes for people with cancer are improving with the world-class medical research we undertake in the UK, but we can always do more to prevent, detect and treat cancer."

Celia Barlow have previously been vocal in her support of the Be Loud! Be Clear! campaign, which 'turns up the noise on Bowel Cancer'.

The Guardian asks: Will Brighton give Lucas the green light?

The Guardian were down in Brighton in force last week as they focus on key constituencies ahead of the this summer's general election.

The constituency in question was Brighton Pavilion, which is being seen as the chance for the Green Party to win their first seat, with party leader Caroline Lucas polling well. She is battling it with Labour's Nancy Platts and the Conservatives' Charlotte Vere.

The Guardian article and accompanying video report focuses on Lucas and her advocation of voting Green to keep out the Conservatives. Catching a glimpse of our would-be MPs is not easy, so it is well worth checking out this story.

Former Hove MP in expenses repayment top ten

Former Hove MP Ivor Caplin has been asked to repay almost £18,000 he claimed in MP's expenses after failing to respond to Sir Thomas Legg's inquiry into the issue.

Sir Thomas Legg's report on MPs' spending from 2004-05 to 2008-09 has resulted in MP's being requested to repay over £1m in total and Caplin, who stood down in 2005, is among the top ten in terms of repayment totals.

Caplin had been requested to provide evidence relating to mortgage interest payments that were claimed for in 2005, but the Labour MP did not respond.

In his report Sir Thomas Legg said: "No reply has been received from Mr Caplin to a number of letters sent to the address held by the House authorities. In default of evidence to support payments for mortgage interest of £17,865.33 for 2004-05 and April 2005, I must regard these payments as having been invalid. Accordingly my recommendation is that Mr Caplin should repay the whole of this sum.”

Grand Designs house in Brighton for sale

A Brighton house featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs TV show has been put up for sale for a cool £3.5m.

The stunning six bedroom and six bathroom property, which boasts an indoor swimming pool and a sauna, has unbeatable views over Brighton from its position in the Withdean hills.

The creation of the contemporary property on Withdean Road formed what was without doubt one of the most dramatic and ambitious Grand Designs TV shows. The builder Barry Surtees created his dream property with his wife Julie, but it remains to be seen if the unique property appeals to the wider market at such a hefty price-tag.

As part of the development an additional property was also constructed on the plot, which is also on the market for just under £1m on one of Brighton's most exclusive of roads, which currently houses Peter Andre and the accompanying media scrum.

Brighton's New Look Seafront

This week has seen Brighton's iconic seafront change forever with the removal of part of the burnt-out wreck of the Victorian West Pier.

The West Pier was built in 1866, but was closed in 1975 and destroyed by fire in 2003. However, while to some the wreckage is unsightly it has become a landmark of choice for photographers in the city and consequently has become a symbol of Brighton.

While the main shell will remain, low tide has enabled workers to remove the remains that lie closest to the shoreline. This move was ordered in granting permission for the i360 to be built in front of the West Pier.

The i360 is an observation tower rising 150m above sea level, allowing for views of 25 miles on a clear day. Despite delays it is hoped the i360 will be in place before the start of the London Olympics in 2012.

Earlier this week, Mary Mears, council leader at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “For many, the removal of part of the West Pier will be a sad moment, It’s part of our history and we’ve lived with it for a long time. However, time moves on and we welcome the start of work to remove the remains of the old structure. The council supports the project and we’re pleased that historic parts will be saved.”

Ellie Goulding to perform at Brighton's Great Escape music festival

Ellie Goulding (pictured), who was recently named the most exciting emerging artists for 2010, will appear at Brighton's musical showcase The Great Escape.

The increasingly significant music festival, which is due to take place between May 13th and May 15, is set to include approximately 300 acts, who will play at roughly 30 venues across the city.

Ellie Goulding, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter, is one of the first names to be announced for the 2010 Great Escape and is so far joined by Delphic, Broken Social Scene, Esben And The Witch and Japandroids.

Brighton women donate 25,000 bras for charity

Brighton and Hove City Council have received over 25,000 bras in the past six months, raising £1,680 for charity in the process.

The unwanted bras have been left in the council's bra banks across the city in a scheme that raises money for local breast cancer charity The Pink Dolphin Appeal.

As the scheme has been so popular the bring pink collection banks have been joined by smaller cardboard banks, which have been placed in shops and offices.

Deputy Council Leader Dee Simson said: “The result has been incredible. We had expected a lull after the first few months, but it’s been quite the opposite, Word has spread and our bra mountain just keeps on growing - 25,200 bras in six months!”

The scheme is run in partnership with national textile recycling company BCR Global, who transport the bras and other clothing to developing countries, where they will can be repaired and sold on.

Pamela Anderson considers Brighton move?

Brighton could be set to welcome in yet another celeb, as according to showbiz reports former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson is considering buying a home by the seaside in England.

However, the reports state that Bournemouth, Blackpool and Morecombe are also being investigated by the actress, but we may be biased in saying that Brighton has much more to offer.

Her agent, Toby St Just, told The Sun: "Pammy loves it in England and is looking at buying two houses, one in London and one by the sea.

"It'll be a far cry from California, where all the people are tanned and beautiful. And she may find the pebble beaches take a little getting used to.

"But she has a real affection for the place and would love to have somewhere she can call home. She hasn't decided where yet, she's still looking at the options."
The ex-Playboy model, 42, has recently been in England having starred in a pantomime version of Aladdin in London.

If she does elect to snap up a property in Brighton she’ll be joining an interesting bunch, with Heather Mills, Peter Andre, Norman Cook & Zoe Ball, Patsy Palmer and Chris Eubank in calling Brighton home. Although, having said that I have not seen Eubank and his enormous ‘hummer’ cruising The Lanes for a while.

Missing apostrophe costs taxpayers £165

Brighton and Hove City Council paid £165.29 to replace a sign that was missing an apostrophe, it has been revealed.

The offending road sign on St James's street in Kemptown was replaced in July last year at the expense of the taxpayer.

However, Brighton Council is not alone in offending as it is one of 14 that admitted paying out to correct inaccurate signs. The details emerged after a request was made under the Freedom of Information Act, although not all councils were willing or able to respond.

The worst offender was Westminster Council, which paid £1,185 to correct five signs.

Don’t pinch our bottom, says Celia Barlow

The bottom in question is Hangleton Bottom in North Portslade (pictured below), which could be going from an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to one that houses a waste management facility.

Celia Barlow, Labour MP for Hove, has urged residents to sign a petition against such a proposal, which is being market tested by the Conservative led council, who are now entitled to sell the land.

The eight-acre Greenfield site, which is located near to the M27, was not included within the boundaries of the South Downs National Park and will lose its AONB status in April.

It has also been suggested that the site near to Foredown Tower could be used as an ambulance depot and community centre, but resident groups have urged that they must be consulted before any decision is made.

Celia Barlow said on her website: “Public land should be kept for public enjoyment and Hangleton Bottom is a green jewel in Portslade's crown. It will be an unwelcome blot on the landscape soon to be surrounded by our new South Downs National Park.”

The possibility of a waste management centre being located at Hangleton Bottom has been on the agenda since 2006, but the matter was freshly discussed at a council meeting last month. After which South Portslade councillor Les Hamilton said: “This green-field site has the chance to be a real asset to local people, which everyone can benefit from, such as community or open spaces. People should have the chance to put their views before the Tories well in advance of them taking a decision of this magnitude.

“I believe the decision taken by the Conservative Councillor to potentially sell off a piece of land for commercial waste should be challenged. Local people should be given the chance to have their say before this Council starts marketing Hangleton Bottom. “

Peter Andre looking for new Brighton house

One of Brighton's many resident celebs, Peter Andre, is looking to buy a property in the area, according to The Sun .

The singer and ex-partner of Katie Price, currently rents a property on an exclusive road in Withdean, but is said to be unhappy at "throwing many down the toilet" and wants a place of his own.

He has been looking at properties in the region of £1.5m since before Christmas, but is yet to find a convenient property for him and his children.

Here are three properties in Brighton and Hove that he may be interested in:

Withdean Road - 5 bed detached house: £1.85m

This property is just yards from where Andre currently lives and is secluded from the glare of the paparazzi, although is in need of some modernisation.

Pet snake found after nine months in a wall

A Brighton boy has been reunited with his pet snake after builders found it in a wall cavity nine months after it had disappeared.

The corn snake, named Caroline, went missing after its owner, 10-year-old Sirus Nimmon, accidentally left the lid off the tank.

Caroline is said to be a little underweight, but otherwise well after her nine month mysterious ordeal.

Sirus told the BBC: "When I realised she was gone I was really sad. We tried to look for her but we couldn't find her so we were all really disappointed.

"I loved her quite a lot because she was the first real pet I had. I felt sorry for myself and angry with myself because it was me who left the cage open."

Cathy Ceesay, Sirus's mother, added: "We think that she must have been eating something, maybe spiders, that's all we can think of.

"How she survived without water we have no idea. We've definitely noticed a lack of spiders in the house since she disappeared; there used to be a lot."

Concorde 2 hosting Haiti Fundraiser

Concorde 2 in Brighton is to a host a fundraising night in February to raise money for Haiti following the devestating earthquake that struck the Caribbean country earlier this month.

The event will take place on Thursday February 18th with all proceeds going directly to the disasters emergency committee Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Groups confirmed to take part so far include Manouchska, Fat 45, Fanfara and Kalakuta Millionaires, while many more are expected to join the bill.

The fundraiser has also quickly gathered the support of Brighton artists, promoters and community groups. Some of those supporting this project include Playgroup, Roots Garden, Pure Natural Vibes, Penflick podcasts and Adaptatrap.

The show gets underway at 8pm and tickets are available for £5, although attendees have been asked to give me if they are able.

Brighton school communicates with Haiti students

In part of a BBC News report students from the Dorothy Stringer School in Brighton have been connecting over the internet with children from Port-au-Prince, the earthquake hit capital of Haiti.

The Brighton students, who have been involved in fundraising for the Haiti earthquake appeal, asked questions to their counterparts at the Morning Star School, who spoke of the atmosphere in the Caribbean country two weeks after the disaster that shocked and saddened the world.

Vere outlines Tories' manifesto on tackling 'broken society'

Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion, Charlotte Vere, has outlined her parties' manifesto on tackling the growing problem of violent crime, which she believes is indicative of "how broken our society has become".

Vere is competing with Green Party leader Caroline Lucas and Labour's Nancy Platts for the constituency, which is nationally significant given the perception that the Greens are on course for a historic victory.

It was recently revealed there were 5,213 violent attacks on people across Brighton and Hove in the last year, so it is no wonder that crime is set to be a key issue in the campaigning ahead of elections later this year.

Vere explained: "Our local police officers deserve the highest praise. But many people across Brighton and Hove are frustrated with our criminal justice system. They feel that it's not on our side anymore.

"The recent stabbing in Kings Road, anti-social behaviour on West Street and the tragically fatal attack at Ocean Rooms on New Year's Day sadly demonstrate just how broken our society has become."

Vere has highlighted some of the key pledges on tackling 'broken Britain' on her website, which includes providing greater protection to residents who are forced to defend themselves against intruders, or try to stop a crime being committed. This is particularly relevant given the recent case of Munir Hussain, who attacked an intruder with a cricket bat. He was released from prison last week after having his sentence suspended.

A topic with local significance that the Tories pledge to tackle is that of supermarkets selling alcohol cheaply, or even at a loss. Given the ever growing list of supermarkets cropping up in Brighton and Hove this is an issue that many residents want looking at.

Winter Wonderland at Brighton and Hove High Junior School

The residents of Brighton and Hove may have had enough of ice after the recent cold snap, but there is more on offer at Brighton and Hove High School this Saturday.

The independent girls school is hosting a Winter Wonderland open day, which includes ice skating, at its premises on Radinden Manor Road this weekend with a range of fun winter activities on offer for children aged between 2 and 7.

The community are invited to come along and join in with a 'morning of winter adventure and discovery', which will run from 10am to noon.

There will be children's size skates and even dual blade skates for toddlers, so the little ones can enjoy the fun of trying to replicate the celebrities on Dancing on Ice.

There will also be hands-on experiments, craft activities, enchanting seasonal stories and refreshments on offer.

Brighton students raise money with 'Hats for Haiti' day

Brighton journalism students wore hats in their lectures all day on Wednesday in a Hats For Haiti day to raise money for the victims of the earthquake that devastated the Caribbean country earlier this month.

Paula O’Shea and Tom Hasson from Journalist Works in Hollingbury arranged the day as a way of getting funds for Oxfam’s Haiti Appeal.

O’Shea said: “We just wanted to raise what we could to help the people of Haiti. The students have been great and shown up wearing all sorts of colourful hats and have donated generously.”

The students were asked to come to their lectures wearing any hat they owned and to donate a minimum of £1 into the collection basket. Lecturer and local radio DJ Richard Lindfield also ran a Quids For Questions session to raise more cash during his lecture.

Student Nicola Slagter said: “We were able to raise a little over £25 between us. We’re glad we could raise anything at all in order to help. In a situation as dire as this, everything helps. Everyone really came together wearing everything from a sailor cap to a cowboy hat.”

The money raised by Journalist Works' Hats For Haiti will be donated to Oxfam’s Haiti Appeal.

It was revealed earlier this week that the Cornish Pasty Shop on Queen's Road in Brighton would be donating a day's takings to the same appeal.

Ocean Rooms put up for sale

The commercial property that currently houses the Ocean Rooms nightclub in Brighton has today been listed for sale at a guide price of £750,000.

The development comes after Ocean Rooms had its license temporarily suspended in the wake of a New Years Day assault outside the premises that resulted in the death of a man.

The building on Morley Street will be sold at auction on March 5th and is listed with agents Austin Gray.

The listing reports that the area of Brighton containing the nightclub is part of a £100m re-development scheme, incorporating the Municipal Market, NCP Car Park and Brighton University’s Phoenix building.

The two-floored building, which last year was the subject of a rejected planning application for an additional floor providing 5 flats, has traded as a nightclub for many years, originally as the Kings Club and currently as The Ocean Rooms.

However, the food is no let down, it is luxurious, exquisitely presented and honestly priced.

As with In Vino Veritas the wine list is astonishing, while after your meal you can enjoy stunning cocktail creations at the adjoining Pub Du Vin, which exudes sophistication.

Deadline looms for school place submissions

Parents with children requiring places at infant and primary schools in Brighton & Hove this September have less than two weeks to submit their preference forms.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 5 February and the reminder to parents is that failure to get forms sent off in time could hinder your children's chances of getting a place your favoured school.

The best way of submitting your preference form is online at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/schooladmissions, while alternatively you can phone the admissions hotline on 01273 293653.”

It was recently announced that both Goldstone and Westdene primary schools have been permitted to accept an extra 30 pupils in the September intake in response to strong demand for places.

Lib Dem Councillor raises Sainsbury's Concerns

Liberal Democrat councillor for Brunswick and Adelaide, Paul Elgood, believes the proposed Sainsbury’s on Western Road would be detrimental to the conservation area.

Residents have already expressed their dismay at the prospect of another supermarket taking its place on this road as Sainsbury’s and Tesco continue their turf war, regardless of the area’s need for a shop.

There is also concern from local residents that the subsequent deliveries would cause move havoc on this road.

Sainsbury’s plan to include an ATM machine on the front of the shop, which will be on a site previously held by two shops, opposite to a Tesco outlet.

On his blog, Councillor Elgood said: “The application does nothing for the appearance of the street, and the proposed advertising will be extremely detrimental to the conservation area.”

He added: “Last week I had a detailed discussion with the area manager for Sainsbury's, raising issues in connection with the unloading at the shop and potential for large lorries to block the road.

“They are undertaking a risk assessment and will use smaller lorries if possible, but she said they would have to take into account the economic viability of doing this. I don't hold out much hope!”

Petition launched to save peregrine falcons

A petition has been launched to help stop a peregrine falcon nest box from being taken down from the tallest building in Sussex - the aptly named Sussex Heights in Brighton.

Sussex Heights has been home to a number of breeding pairs of peregrine falcons since the mid 1990s and a nest box was put there in 1998 and has been used yearly by the birds ever since.

At the time of writing 672 people have added their names to the petition, which was started one week ago in response to news that maintenance work could mean the removal of the nesting box.

The petition explains that the rare falcons are an important wildlife to have in Brighton for both educational and conservational reasons. It also warns that the falcons may be unsuccessful if they still attempt to nest on the tower block if the nest box is removed.

The nest box even has a webcam running during the nesting season, allowing an insight into the life of these birds, while the Regency Brighton website also has blogs, images and videos relating to the birds.

Brighton Workers' meeting planned ahead of protest

A meeting has been organised by Brighton and Hove Trades Council and Brighton and Hove Unison where Brighton workers can voice their concerns at job cuts across the city.

The meeting is to take place at the Hanover Room in the Brighthelm Centre on North Road on Tuesday 9th February, starting at 7.30pm.

It comes ahead of a planned march through the city on March 10th, which has been organised by trade union activists and campaigners, who have called on Brighton workers "to fight back against the unjustified job losses taking place across the city and the country"

The meeting next month is to be attended by a local RMT member, who it is claimed in "seriously considering balloting for strike action to stop Network Rail axeing 1500 track maintenance jobs".

The meeting will also raise issues concerning Sussex University UCU, Shoreham factory Edwards and Preston Circus Fire Station.

The organisers' press release states: "We will also be discussing what we can all do to help each group, how we can link the struggles together, and what we can all do to prepare for the even bigger attacks on us all after the election."

Brighton has experienced heavy job losses in the past 12 months, largely from Lloyds TSB at their call centre in Hove, while Brighton daily The Argus has also been forced into making significant redundancies.

Burns Night in Brighton

This evening is of course Burns Night – the celebration of Scottish poet Robert Burns’ birthday – so Brighton’s Scottish contingent will presumably be honouring the occasion with haggis (which apparently is enjoying a roaring trade in supermarkets) and whiskey tonight.

However, for a full celebration in Brighton you’ll have to wait until Saturday and head down to The West Quay in Brighton Marina.

The party, hosted by Alan Mars, starts at 8pm and will include “words, song & dance, a parade and address to the Haggis”.

'Meow Meow' drug causing big concerns in Brighton

There is concern that use of the drug known as Meow Meow, or mephedrone, is increasingly widespread among Brighton school children.

The drug is incredibly still legal, as it is sold as a fertilliser or plant food on the internet for as little at £4 per gram, but its effects when snorted are said to be similar to ecstasy.

Sam Beal, acting healthy schools team leader for Brighton and Hove City Council, told The Times: "It's clear that increased numbers of 14 and 15-year-olds started using meow meow at the end of last summer and we have big concerns about this.

"Teachers hear about this more and more and they are concerned that the drugs are being brought into schools.

The use of Meow Meow came to prominence in local news following the death of 14-year-old Worthing schoolgirl Gabi Price at a house party in Moulsecombe in Brighton last November.

Brighton daily The Argus reported soon after that children as young as 12 had been spotted taking the drug on school buses, while at the turn of the year it was announced students in Brighton would be taught about the dangers of this drug.

Teachers have also been guided how to spot the signs that the drug has been taken, as a growing number of teachers report witnessing students arriving for lessons in a disorientated state.

The concern has intensified this weekend with the news that an 18-year-old from Hertfordshire, Ben Walters, died at a house party after apparently taking the drug.

Brighton's Jelly Bean Queen

This is the Queen as you have never seen her before! The picture below (from The Telegraph) is a portrait of the Queen made entirely from jelly beans.

The impressive mosaic was made by the Jelly Belly company and is currently on display in Brighton's Fizziwig's sweet shop, which can be found on Meeting House Lane in the South Lanes.

Shop owner Nick Adam said: "It's fantastic. Everyone who walks by looks at it. It's made up of 10,000 beans, all of them real but they have been covered in lacquer. People have been amazed by it and `awesome' is probably the word people use most."

Chinese New Year 2010 in Brighton and Hove

Brighton and Hove's significant Chinese community will be celebrating the Chinese New Year next month as they welcome in the Year of the Tiger.

The main date for the celebrations is shared with Valentines Day this year, on Sunday 14th February, but Brighton and Hove will be commemorating the occasion on Saturday February 6th at Hove Town Hall.

The event, which takes on the theme of 'A Beautiful Jasmine', will run from noon to 5pm. At Hove Town Hall will be exhibition stalls, have-a-go workshops including calligraphy and lantern making, while there will be many festive Chinese delicacies on offer.

There will also be traditional sights and sounds with lion dancers and dragon parades as the local Chinese community celebrate this important time of the year.

On February 14th itself there are sure to be fireworks across the city, while lanterns will be released from Brighton's seafront.

Disabled actors sought for Brighton Festival play

A group are looking to cast only actors with disabilities for a Brighton Festival play, which will perform in May.

The group are part of the Bite-Size play organisation and are set to perform 'Funny as a Crutch'- a series of short plays about disability issues. (Click on the link for a review)

They are keen for all the parts to be taken by disabled actors with the definition of disability being taken at its widest. Disabled costumiers, set designers, artists and musicians are also being sought for this project.

Deghayes settling in Brighton after Guantánamo Nightmare

After five years of being detained in Guantánamo, Omar Deghayes returned to his childhood home of Saltdean, near Brighton.

Within an enlightening and fascinating interview with The Guardian he has spoken of the changes that occurred in his neighbourhood while he was away and his growing love for Brighton, which reminds him of the Libyan capital Tripoli.

Speaking of his shock at the changes that had taken place in Britain upon his return from Guantanamo, he said: "To my shock, when I came out from prison the whole country had changed – the surveillance, the Islamophobia, the control orders, secret evidence, and people being under curfews not being able to leave the house."

Regarding Saltdean, where his family were targeted by racist teenagers until police installed a video camera in their home, he added: "We never had thugs and mobs in the street before, and kids didn't go binge-drinking or stealing. When I came back, these were some of the changes that I had to adjust to.”

Deghayes, who remarried in December and has a new place in Brighton, added: "Brighton is such a nice city. You can just walk by the sea, and the fresh air comes across. It reminds me of Tripoli. Before, I used to long for Tripoli; now, only recently, I have started to prefer Brighton. Maybe when you are younger you want to go back to dreams, and when you get to 40 you start to think, this is nicer, this is really what I like."

Brighton & Hove Unemployment Figures tool from the BBC

The BBC have created an interactive map showing unemployment figures as part of their recession tracker.

The figures are from the Office of National Statistics, which announced this week that the number of those unemployed in the UK is now 2.46 million, down 7,000 on the previous figure - the first time in 18 months that the figure has fallen.

The unemployment figures for the three Brighton and Hove constituencies range between 4.2% and 4.6%, which is among the highest in the South East.

However, this week also saw a report stating that Brighton was one of the best placed cities to ride out the recession.

Hove's new resident celeb gets engaged

David Walliams, who it was revealed last month is moving to Hove, has become engaged to Dutch model Lara Stone.

The Little Britain star is understood to have purchased one of the Western Esplanade properties in Hove for a fee in the region of £1.5m, but news that the comedian had snapped up the 'ultimate bachelor pad' now appear short of the mark.

The 38-year-old, who is also famous for having swam the English Channel for charity, proposed in Los Angeles to the Vogue cover girl, who is 13 years his junior.

Walliams, who has previously been linked with a number of celebs, told the Sun newspaper: "It's true, we're engaged and blissfully happy."

Walliams and his wife-to-be are set to become the latest residents on Hove's Millionaire Row with Normal Cook, Zoe Ball, Nick Berry and Heather Mills among the famous faces on the seafront.

Seedy Sunday in Hove – It is not what you think

Seedy Sunday, which takes place at Hove Town Hall on the first Sunday in February, is also a campaign to protect biodiversity and protest against the increasing control of the seed supply by large companies.

Brighton set for Sport Relief Mile

The Sport Relief charity Mile has been launched this week with Brighton one of the chosen destintions for the fundraising scheme.

The Sport Relief Mile, sponsored by Sainsbury's, takes place at Madeira Drive on Sunday 21st March 2010.

The Sport Relief Mile is available to everyone and all are encouraged to come out and get involved, from toddlers to grandmas and grandads. You can do just one mile, but for the more energetic there are three and six mile options available.

The money raised is used to help poor and vulnerable people, both here in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.

The first Brighton Marathon is due to take place on April 18th this year, so there is plenty to get into shape for this year in Brighton and Hove.

Brighton Council saves Pride, but not everyone is happy

It was revealed today that Brighton and Hove City Council has lent the organisers of Pride £20,000 so that the annual event can take place this summer.

Pride had failed to raise all the money it required, putting the future of Brighton's most famous and iconic festival in doubt. However, the Council has stepped in to save the day with what is described as a short-term bridging loan.

A statement on Pride's website reads: "Pride in Brighton & Hove’s financial position has been secured as a result of successful fund raising events, cost-cutting measures and a short term bridging loan from Brighton and Hove City Council.

"The on-going fund raising efforts have netted over £14,000, while cost-cutting measures saved around £11,000. A loan of £20,000 from Brighton and Hove City Council, along with a commitment to pay by one of last year’s sponsors, meant that the potential budget shortfall was successfully bridged by the end of last year."

On the face of it the decision does make financial sense given the money that Pride brings into the city during the weekend of events. Thousands of visitors travel to Brighton for pride and stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and drink (a lot) in bars and pubs. It would be a big loss to Brighton if such a famous event was lost, but is it the Council's position to save Pride? This is the question that seems to be dividing opinion, especially at a time when there is a consensus that money is required to spent elsewhere.

In a poll on The Argus' website 52% have stated that they believe "if the organisers can't make it pay themselves, it shouldn't go ahead". While one reader, Ystad Nyberg, stated: "I can't for the life of me work out why it can't be self financing - or even make a profit. It must be very badly run."

This appears to be the problem. The event is very popular and very important, so why does it need financial assistance? What plans are in place to ensure the loan can be repaid and that the problem is not repeated again next year.

With the public opinion mixed the decision by the Conservative led council could become political. However, Green Party leader Caroline Lucas said this afternoon: "Very glad Council has made loan to Brighton Pride. Great for community and equality & makes good economic sense too."

Brighton Language School fears for future

The English Language School in Brighton fears 40% of its business could be wiped out by proposals to tighten visa rules.

An estimated 600,000 people visit the UK each year in order to learn English. A great number of them arrive on the South Coast in places such as Brighton in order to improve their language skills ahead of embarking on higher education courses.

However, a review of student visas in the wake of revelations concerning bogus colleges has been ordered by prime minister Gordon Brown. It has been speculated that a number of applications for visas from China, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are forged.

The proposed new system would limit the availability of student visas for those wishing to learn English from a basic level following their arrival, so consequently English language schools would be hard hit – potentially depriving Brighton from revenue brought by foreign students at the same time.

Philip Hopkins, principal of the English Language Centre in Brighton, warns the proposal could result in 40% of the school's business being wiped out.

"We are an educational charity founded in 1962 and many of the students we get for long-term courses are students who go on to a foundation, undergraduate or master's programme and will be in the UK education system for the next four or five years,” quotes the Guardian.

He added: "I am totally in support of any clampdown on bogus colleges, and their use to abuse the visa system should be stopped. It has a very bad impact on genuine schools like ours who have very high standards of teaching and facilities.

"I understand the government's concerns, but the solution isn't to close every language school in the country."

Brighton Council look for ‘buddies’ for those with disabilities

Brighton and Hove City Council has put out a request for volunteers to become ‘buddies’ for adults with physical disabilities that use the Montague House resource centre.

If you are over 18 and interested in giving up a few hours of your time, you can help out with social activities, such as going out to football matches or to the cinema. Alternatively, more practical help is required for some, such as accompanying people to medical appointments or the benefits office.

Councillor Ken Norman, cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “This is a new initiative aimed at improving people’s quality of life.

“The people we work with have hobbies, interests and pastimes which they would like to share or things they want assistance with. So we would be delighted to hear from anyone who thinks they could help in any way.”

Four arrests during Smash EDO disruption

The planned Smash EDO demonstration today has resulted in four arrests and a great deal of disruption in the city, which is probably as good as Brighton could have hoped for.

The 'funeral procession' had been organised by Smash EDO a year after the conclusion of an Israeli offensive in Gaza, as the protest group believe the EDO factory in Moulsecoombe produce and supply arms used in that offensive.

The group of protestors, numbering roughly 200 according to reports, joined forces at Wild Park at 1pm today and after attempting to break through police lines at the factory at Home Park Road they made their way south to The Level.

Police attempted to bring the 'procession' to a halt, but protestors continued on to the North Laine area of Brighton where a number of people were 'kettled in' - meaning they were boxed in by police - near to Wagamama's restaurant.

The following statement on today's events has been released by Sussex Police.

Brighton and Hove City Commander, Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett said: "Once again, during a demonstration organised by Smash EDO, we have seen intimidating behaviour and sporadic outbreaks of disorder within Wild Park, Home Farm Road and the city centre.

"Members of public including many visitors trying to go about their normal business have clearly been frightened by the behaviour of a small minority of protestors and many have faced disruption.

"As at 7.00pm, there were four arrests for public order offences. We will continue to investigate any other offences that have occurred and where possible bring those responsible to justice.

"We aimed to facilitate peaceful protest, safeguarding the public and minimising disruption, and made concerted efforts to engage with the organisers about their intentions today. Once again, for future events, I urge those who wish to hold demonstrations in the city to abide by the law and notify the police of their intentions in advance so that jointly we can plan a safe but visible event which respects their right to protest and others rights to go about their business free from intimidation and violence.

"The officers involved in policing today's demonstration are the same officers who work in our local communities providing the policing service expected of us.

"We would all rather see them helping to resolve local issues in their neighbourhoods. We are used to policing larger demonstrations than this with far fewer officers due to the organisers engaging with us and being part of the planning process."

Brighton well-placed for recession recovery, says think tank.

Brighton has been identified as one of the cities best placed to recover from the recession in a report by independent think tank Centre for Cities. Download the report in PDF here.

"Brighton, Milton Keynes, Reading, Cambridge and Edinburgh have the right ingredients to succeed after the recession has passed," stated the report, which named Hull as the city with largest percentage of people claiming jobseeker's allowance.

The reported added: "Other cities, such as Stoke, Burnley, Barnsley, Newport and Doncaster, with their weaker business base, have a much tougher outlook."

So today is, we are told, the most depressive day of the year. Blue Monday, or the third Monday of the new year, is reportedly when post-Christmas gloom is at its darkest.

A psychologist, Cliff Arnall, developed a formula in 2005 that has now given us all an annual reason to be downbeat for a day.

The formula, which is enough to give someone depression in itself, has seven variables: (W) weather, (D) debt, (d) monthly salary, (T) time since Christmas, (Q) time since failed quit attempt, (M) low motivational levels and (NA) the need to take action.

All of the above taken into account does not bode well for today, January 18th, so what should we do when down in the dumps? Go to the pub, perhaps.

Well, here is some good news, depending on your viewpoint, as The Argus reports that there is a bar in Brighton for every 84 residents.

Uni researchers get £1.5m to fight sex infections

Brighton and Sussex University researchers have received £1.5m to help find ways to treat partners of people with sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

As an increasing numbers of people are diagnosed with chlamydia and gonorrhoea there is a need to research treatment for their partners to prevent a further spread of infections.

A Brighton University press release explains the plan, saying: 'Volunteer patients diagnosed with an STI in Sussex will be given information and will be asked to tell partners about the problem and the need to be treated.

'Some will just be given standard information and advice. Others will be offered help in the form of a health adviser offering to inform partners - either straight away or a little while after diagnosis.'

Professor Jackie Cassell, who is leading the research at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, said: “We will measure how well these approaches to partner notification work by comparing how many partners get treated.

"We will also measure how many of the original patients are still infected several weeks later in each group - this is also a good measure of partner notification. Patients may have different preferences for contacting different kinds of partners (for example, ex or current partners) - and we will explore their views in order to help design services."

The study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

Smash EDO 'funeral procession' to take place on Monday

A large group of anti-arms protesters are expected to take part in a mock funeral procession in Brighton tomorrow at 1pm in protest against a factory in Moulsecoomb that they believe produces arms used against civilians.

Smash EDO will begin the procession, complete with fake coffins, from Wild Park, off Lewes Road in Moulsecoomb, tomorrow and march towards the EDO factory on Home Farm Road.

However, there is likely to be a heavy police presence following the large unrest that occurred during the group's last mass-demonstration in 2008. The protest is designed to be peaceful, but another group of protesters called Fit Watch, who attempt to block police photographers, state it will be a "lively affair".

It has been reported that supporters are being bused in from all across the country for the protest, which is taking place on the anniversary of the conclusion of Israel's military offensive in Gaza last year.

Suggestions that the factory supplies arms to Israel are central to Smash EDO's campaign, although the factory has previously denied this accusation.

In a recent blog post, 'Fit Watch', said: "On the first anniversary after their deaths, we will rise up. We will take to the streets. We will remember..."

'Journalists' camping out on Withdean Road

One of Brighton's most expensive roads is that of Withdean Road with its collection of huge properties, isolated and protected by the hills and trees in between Dyke Road Avenue and the railway line.

It is partly famous for its 'Grand Designs' house and also for tabloid favourite Peter Andre residing there, along with the collection of millionaires that own properties reaching up to the £4m mark - one of which is rumoured to be close to coming on the market by the way.

Now a Facebook campaign targets Caroline Lucas

Earlier this month a Green Party orchestrated campaign targeted the Conservative's Brighton Pavilion candidate Charlotte Vere over a controversial 'tweet' on Twitter, which Vere has since apologised for.

However, her main rival for the constituency, Green Party leader Caroline Lucas, is now the target of a Facebook campaign and online petition calling for her resignation in relation to her expenses as an MEP.

The topic of Lucas' transparency on expenses was initially brought to the debating table by Vere, although her questions have largely gone unanswered and in the new world of social media a possible storm is brewing.

The facebook campaign and online petition come as Charlotte Vere has commented on her blog (title - Should my children see this?)at her disappointment at the current ugly nature of the election campaign from the Green Party.

Brighton Pavilion is a hotly sought seat with polling putting the Greens on course for their first seat in Westminster.

Ocean Rooms Nightclub has licence suspended

Ocean Rooms nightclub in Brighton has had its licence suspended after an emergency council meeting today, which followed the recent death of a man that was assaulted outside the premises on New Year's Day.

The nightclub on Morley Street, which is famous for its eye-catching murals, will have its licence fully reviewed in 28 days.

Brighton and Hove City Council explained the meeting was called following an application by the police for an urgent review of the licence using powers under the Licensing Act.

Councillor Lynda Hyde, who chaired the emergency meeting, said: “I’m pleased with the decision as public safety must be our top priority. We have serious concerns about the management of the club and its association with serious crime.”

Councillor Hyde added: “The Ocean Rooms have shown a clear disregard for the licensing objectives of public safety; the protection of children from harm and the prevention of crime and disorder. The panel believes that the suspension of the licence is necessary in the interests of public safety and for the prevention of further crime and disorder.”

The licence holders have a right of appeal against the decision.

Brighton Pavilion Free Entry on Sunday 17th January

Brighton set to be a city of sprouting vegetables

Brighton and Hove City Council has announced that it is considering plans to allow residents to grow food on patches of spare land.

Council leader Mary Mears explained the city has "more potential gardeners than gardens", so is looked to emulate a scheme pioneered by Todmorden.

The Incredible Edible scheme in the Lancashire town led to food being grown in unexpected places, such as a recreation ground and under a railway viaduct. While, elsewhere crops have sprouted in of all places, a Lidl car park.

The council is conducting a survey of available land, which they would licence for a nominal sum on the understand it is properly maintained.

The initiative stems from a project called Harvest Brighton, which recently won £500,000 of lottery funding to increase the number of people growing food locally.

Council leader and sustainability committee chairman Mary Mears said: “At the moment we have more potential gardeners than gardens. So this is a piece of lateral thinking which we hope will help to meet that demand.

“During the war every spare scrap of land was pressed into service. Maybe we could rekindle that ‘Dig for Victory’ spirit.”

We suggest The Level should be turned into a big vegetable patch to give the 'locals' something to eat with their Special Brew.

On a serious note, this is an excellent proposal as the concept of growing your own food is one that should be strongly encouraged.

Western Esplanade is preparing itself for the sound of screaming through the night, no we are not talking about the latest celebrity resident David Walliams, but the news that Zoe Ball has given birth to a girl.

Ball, who is married to Brighton DJ Fatboy Slim (Normal Cook) gave birth to Nelly May Lous Cook yesterday. The couple already have a son, Woody, aged 9.

Western Esplanade in Hove is famed for its collection of celebs with Nick Berry and Heather Mills also living in the series of beachside villas, while David Walliams secured his place late last year.

Brighton History Centre Wins Reprieve

After widespread public outcry Brighton's History Centre has won a reprieve, Brighton and Hove City Council's leader Mary Mears announced this evening.

In a cost cutting measure the centre at the Brighton Museum, in Church Street, was facing closure. However, a number of internet campaigns and media campaigns helped to raise the centre's profile, while 1,200 people signed a petition on the council's website - forcing the council to reconsider the proposal.

The decision was announced this evening at Hove Town Hall with Mary Mears announcing that some of the council's discretionary spending would be redirected in response to the public's level of affection for the centre.

Green Party candidate calls for nationalisation of private schools

The Green Party’s Ben Duncan, who is councillor for Queen's Park and is standing in Brighton’s Kemptown constituency, has called for the nationalisation of private schools.

His logic and reasoning is on offer on his blog, which you can read here. He points out that his views do not represent that of the Green Party, which in this instance is a relief.

The prompt for his call was the GCSE and A-level results, released earlier this week, which showed Brighton College sitting proudly within 1% of perfection (in terms of their pupils receiving at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above), while Portslade Community College, Falmer High School and Hove Park School sitting very much at the other end of the spectrum.

It is of course, never acceptable that schools should be failing, or at least struggling to give their students a decent chance of receiving a good education. It is perfectly acceptable to call for increases in funding to help these schools to improve, but why should Brighton College be nationalised and how would that incredibly expensive process help?

Brighton College boasts an impressive 165 year history and routinely scores very highly in national league tables as its students receive an education that is second-to-none and consequently do very well in their exams. Now, to quote Mr Duncan:

"By my sums, enrolling a child at Brighton College for the length of a school career costs just over £150,000. For that money, you'll buy not just smaller class sizes and better facilities but, it seems, better chances of doing well in your exam, and, probably, a longer life and higher future earnings into the bag. It hardly seems fair, does it?"

Fair? How is this anything but fair? It is fair as the parents that send their chidren to Brighton College can afford the £150,000 to do so. They have, in the majority of cases, worked exceptionally hard during their lives to be able to give their children this opportunity. If a level of education exists that is worth this figure then why should parents not choose to send their child there and enjoy the best facilities and the best teachers.

It would be unfair if Brighton College only accepted students because their name was ‘John’ or only if they had blue eyes. If you can afford to send your child to Brighton College you do so, if you can’t, it is not Brighton College’s fault that other establishments are below par.

Is it unfair that people eat at £150pp restaurants? Surely not, they are choosing to enjoy the luxuries that they are able to afford. Nobody would argue that this restaurant should help fund the local kebab shop?

Of course, this is disrespectful to those underfunded state schools and Mr Duncan is absolutely right to fight their corner.

However, his approach epitimises the Green Party’s political standing as being a good trigger of valid debates, an acceptable choice for a protest vote, but not a party that is capable of implementing feasible policies.

To consider nationalising a failing private school is one matter, to suggest nationalising a successful one is just ludicrous.

Jubilee Library Displays 'Portraits for Prosperity'

Brighton's Jubilee Library has begun displaying a photographic exhibition by Matt Writtle, which features 12 local survivors of the Holocaust.

Portraits for Posterity - which runs at the library until February 13 - endeavours to educate future generations with the testimonies of the photographed individuals, who have submitted a short biography to accompany each photo.

The exhibition, which has previously been on display in London, has been profile by The Guardian and The Times.

Brighton College head drops iGCSE and describes situation 'a farce'

Brighton College headmaster Richard Cairns has described the GCSE league table situation as "a farce" in the wake of the independent school's rise in the league tables having dropped the IGCSE - the international equivalent of the normal GCSE.

The IGCSE has been adopted by many independent school for being deemed more challenging and rewarding for its pupils, but Cairns does not believe it is "better", just "different.

Mr Cairns said: “Last year we got 0 per cent A-C including English and maths, this year [because of dropping the IGCSE] we got 99 per cent, it’s a farce.”

The Government does not recognise IGCSEs, which has an effect on schools choosing to use them, although this is not given as Cairns reason for abandoming the IGCSE in maths and choosing not to take up the option in English. putting independent schools which teach them to the bottom of its league table. Brighton insists that its position in the tables is not a factor in abandoning the IGCSE in maths and not taking it up in English.

He explained: “We became concerned that the marking of IGCSEs in some subjects was rather variable — particularly in English. There were pupils not getting A*s who would have been expected to do so at other schools."

Brighton and Hove High School, the independent girls school, is currently following the IGCSE syllabus for Maths.

Unexpectedly Brighton College tops the list with 99% of its pupils achieving at least five GCSEs at or above grade C. Dorothy Stringer ranked as the best non-fee-paying school in Brighton and Hove with their GCSE results. Troubled Portslade Community College was at the bottom of the pile.

The all-important missing 1% saw Brighton College miss out on being in joint 1st with the national GCSE results table, but its average A-level points tally of 257.7 saw it finish in 34th place across the country.

Brighton Council wins praise from equality index

Brighton and Hove City Council have been named the fourth best employers for gay workers in Stonewall’s annual Workplace Equality Index.

IT giant IBM were crowned top employer with Hampshire Constabulary in second place.

It is claimed that the index is used by Britain's 1.7m gay employees and 150,000 gay university students when making key life decisions.

Brighton & Hove City Council won particular praise with its staff forum, which was recognised by Stonewall as a ‘Star Network Group’.

Cabinet councillor for community affairs, Dee Simson, said: "I’m very proud that Britain’s top gay pressure group continues to rate us so highly. Our commitment to equal treatment for all our communities can also now be seen in the new city-wide equalities charter for statutory agencies that we’ve helped put together."

Trip Advisor is not exactly an authority on culinary excellent, but it is an extremely popular method for gaining destination information and it is on the whole trusted by many.

Therefore, we focus on Pomegranate, which is currently rated as Brighton's number one restaurant. With 96% of reviewers recommending this restaurant it is hard to argue against statistics like that (although they could of course be made up).

Pomegranate is a Kurdistani restaurant and is reasonable priced with mains ranging from £11 to £16. A speciality is Roast Lamb, Kurdish style, served with rice - fillo stuffed with nuts and apricots.

Of course you'd expect some Pomegranate on the menu and it comes with the mouthwatering dessert of stuffed figs with walnuts, honey and topped with the all-important pomegranate paste.

The Argus jumps on Council-bashing bandwagon

The stream of stories lambasting Brighton and Hove City Council is showing no signs of drying up, as it seems we are a city united in disapproval for our council's efforts on everything, including education, refuse collection and most of all the weather. But are we?

The latest to come from The Argus this morning is Brighton and Hove council staff admit: "We ignore the public", which they presumably hoped would help the paper sell like sledges and salt.

They must have thought as the public dislike the council this headline will resonate with them, which is fine, only for the fact that it is totally misleading.

The story revolves around a survey by the Audit Commission, which states that 57% of the councillors and staff surveyed "thought that the council did not take action in response" to consultations with the public.

Now, this is very different to "ignoring the public". If they were ignoring the public they presumably wouldn't have held any consultation in the first place.

It is not to say that the findings of the survey are not concerning, while many residents have valid claims that suggestions they've made to the council have gone unheeded.

However, The Argus must also be suggesting that whatever the public bring up in consultation with council staff should result in action being taken? Including, for example, Bob from Brighton calling for the city to do away with parking meters.

Ok, the above is not very sensible, but The Argus has clearly manipulated the Audit Commission's findings to generate an eye-catching headline, which will only do further damage to the public's perception of the council.

Finally, the survey, which fieldwork I believe was carried out back in 2008, also stated that 60% of those surveyed said the actual process of consulting the public was carried out well. However, that wouldn't have made a good headline.

Brighton Pavilion attracting national attention

As expected, with the prospect of the first Green Party MP, Brighton Pavilion has begun to attract national attention in this election year.

A recent ICM Poll that put Green Party leader Caroline Lucas ahead of the Conservative candidate Charlotte Lucas seems to have finally trickled its way into the agenda of the commentators from various broadsheets.

Geoffrey Lean, a veteran environmental correspondent, has said his piece on a blog post for the Daily Telegraph. He raised doubts over the maturity of the party and questioned Lucas' method of being in the position to win the most green of all constituencies.

While the Independent's Michael McCarthy has been on the campaign trail with Ms Lucas, who describes her rival Vere as having created 'substantial noise for the Conservatives'.

I only hope the interest remains positive and brings out the best in the politicians and we do not see a media circus that followed ghastly George Galloway's campaign in Bethnal Green in 2005.

The Evening Star, Brighton's best source of real ale, strong ciders and beers of the world, is a hidden gem in a city drowning in drinking hole options.

Found on the corner of Surrey Street (incidentally near Brighton's 'adult shops', The Evening Star will be missed by the crowds that disembark at Brighton train station and head off down Queen's Road. However, this is a blessing as it really is a small pub and would lose its local qualities if it was overcrowded with all-and-sundry.

The collecting of ales and ciders on offer is obviously this pub's strong point, especially with so many available off the pumps. There is consequently a permanent collecting of real ale types (with the bellies and the beards) and they will often look down on those that don't meet the stereotype. However, the bar staff are extraordinarily helpful and willing to allow you to sample the brews and give their own suggestions.

Finally, to give you some background information, from 1994 to 2001, the award-winning Dark Star beer was brewed on the premises. To keep up with the demand it was forced to move.

Brighton College pupils to sleep over ahead of exams

Pupils at Brighton's top private school have been asked to sleep over on the premises to ensure they are able to attend crucial A-level exams, starting on Monday, as the winter weather continues to cause havoc.

Schools minister Vernon Coaker has issued new guidance to schools on planning for severe weather conditions, but there is uncertainty how to deal with pupils that are unable to attend exams because of snow and ice.

As a result, Brighton College headmaster Richard Cairns has invited pupils to sleep over to make sure they can attend, especially with further snow forecast this evening, ahead of Monday's A-level maths exam, which 135 students are due to sit.

Cairns said: "Three hundred Brighton College pupils have A-level exams next week - either AS or A2 - but several are snowed in at home and the Met Office is warning of a risk of more severe weather in the south on Monday. On that day, 135 Brighton College pupils are due to sit maths papers. They are not alone. Thousands of students are scheduled to take exams next week."

He added: "We are making arrangements for all students in outlying areas to stay in our boarding houses overnight before exams - we have brought in mattresses and sleeping bags. This in itself is a less than satisfactory backdrop for important exams and the boards should accept applications from us for special consideration for those affected."

2010 Events: Sussex Beer Festival

The much-loved CAMRA Sussex Beer and Cider Festival returns to Hove in March for a three-day drinking extravaganza. The Festival will run from Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th March 2010.

A record number of over 220 ales will be on offer at the festival, while a large number of ciders, perries and country wins will also be available for sampling and enjoying.

The drinks primarily have a local theme with the downstairs bar designated to stock those beers from breweries in Sussex.

Brighton Sealife Centre surprised by 16 baby electric rays

A marbled electric ray has given birth to 16 babies at Brighton Seaflife centre - the first time the species has reproduced while in captivity in Britain.

The rays are capable of giving electric shows similar to that of mains power. It was a stingray that killed Australian naturalist Steve Irwin.

The baby rays, described as being as big as the bottom of a coffee cup, are said to be healthy and eating slivers of squid in a nursery tank at Brighton Sealife Centre.

The mother, who is the size of a large dinner plate, was delivered to the centre in September by a local fisherman

Brighton Sealife Centre's curator Alex Gerrard said: "She settled in well, but started to go off her food mid-way through December.

"We were worried she might be ill but realise now it was because she was ready to go into labour."

New severe weather warning issued for Sussex

The Met Office has issued a new severe weather warning for East Sussex, as the winter nightmare shows no signs of easing.

With Brighton and Hove still covered with snow and ice the fresh warning of heavy snowfall, occuring from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning, is set to result in widespread traffic chaos.

A statement on the Met Office's website said: "There is a high risk of severe weather affecting Kent, East Sussex and eastern parts of West Sussex. Outbreaks of snow starting on Saturday afternoon will become heavy and persistent during the evening and last into Sunday morning. 7 to 12 cm of fresh level snow are expected widely with 10 to 20 cm locally. Drifting in the very strong winds will cause even greater accumulations in places. Disruption to transport networks is possible.

"The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the Highways Agency for further advice regarding traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads."

Brighton Chocolate Festival Set For March

On this note it seems timely to bring attention to one of Brighton's best shops - Choccywoccydooday! It also has, in our opinion, the best name.

Mears urges Brighton residents to do their bit

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears has urged residents to "do their bit to clear the ice and snow".

Wednesday's snow has now become a blanket of ice covering the city, causing dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike.

With tonight expected to bring the coldest temperatures of this winter the situation is only going to get worse, but Cllr Mears hopes that residents and businesses will knuckle down and help the council to clear parts of the city.

Cllr Mears said: “We’re doing what we can but residents and businesses can help in the effort to keep the city moving. We’re asking people to ‘Shovel, Sweep, Salt’ if they are able, especially those who live or work in residential and side streets. Council staff, including many seconded from other services, are working flat out gritting the highways and major paths.

“But we are experiencing the worst cold snap we’ve had for decades it would be of great service if people could do their bit to clear the snow and ice.”

The council have already moved to reassure people that they are highly unlikely to face any legal liability for accidents that arise following their attempts to clear snow and ice from pavements near their home.

The advice is to "shovel, sweep and salt", although salt and grit is in short supply across the city as we battle with the worst weather conditions experiences in Brighton and Hove for roughly 30 years.

Demolition of 'ugly' Gilligan Stand begins

The snow has brought much of Brighton and Hove to a standstill, but somewhat impressively, the demolition of the Sussex County Cricket ground's Gilligan Stand has got underway.

Brighton and Hove City Council had given permission for the 'ugly' stand to levelled as part of an £8m scheme to redevelop Sussex's 170-year-old home.

The Gilligan 'sea end' Stand, named after English cricketer Arthur Gilligan, is considered to be one of the biggest eyesores on the county circuit.

Club chairman Jim May said last year: “The Gilligan Stand is an ugly building and it’s quite symbolic that it is coming down. It will show to people that we are getting on with the redevelopment.”

The new South Stand will be in place for the 2011 season and will house a new Media Centre, the security control room and the established Howzat! Centre.

Brighton Council appeals to 4x4 drivers for help

Brighton and Hove City Council has today appealed for drivers of 4x4 vehicles to help them out as the ice has made many roads inaccessible for the majority of vehicles.

Those prepared to offer their services and deliver meals to those in need are asked to call 01273 410117.

Even the most suitable of vehicles have been struggling to gain traction on the icy roads this morning with Dyke Road Avenue and the Seven Dials area particular difficult despite the best efforts of the gritting lorries.

The situation is of course worse on the untreated side roads and Sussex Police have again appealed to residents to stay at home unless their trip is essential.

2010 Events: Brighton Science Festival

One of the largest science festivals in England is to take place in Brighton next month. The 2010 Brighton Science Festival returns for a 6th year between the 12th and 28th of February.

The festival, which takes theme of Incredible Machines, includes a film by Terry Gilliam and a talk from Robert Winston. View the full programme of events on the Brighton Science Festival's official website.

The fortnight festival takes place during the February half term, which should give parents the chance to get their children involved in this fascinating look at the world of science.

The organisers of the event said: "Throughout the fortnight please come, listen, debate, argue, discover the past and prepare for the future. Much of the science will be happening in a pub near you. This is science for non-scientists. It is incredible, but don't take our word for it; try for yourself. Nothing is expensive, and nearly half is free."

The festival, which will include a spaghetti tower, marks the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society, the organisation which replaced old superstitions with precise science.

Brighton's Conservatives against fox hunting ban repeal

It is widely accepted that the ban on fox hunting will be reviewed by the Conservatives if (when) they win this year's general election.

Labour's Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has claimed that David Cameron will make repealing the ban "a priority" on taking up office, but Brighton's conservatives do not appear to share this viewpoint.

Charlotte Vere, the Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion, has publicly stated that she stands on the side of keeping the ban intact.

On her blog, Ms Vere said: "A few days after being selected as the Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion, I was asked to sign up to Vote Cruelty Free. Although foxhunting is a minor issue on the doorstep, compared with say the desperate state of our economy or our disgraceful national debt, I believe that the majority of people in Brighton Pavilion do not support a repeal of the Hunting Act. So, I signed up."

She also confirmed that her colleagues in Brighton Kemptown (Simon Kirby) and Hove and Portslade (Mike Weatherley) have also signed up.

The Hunting Act was launched in 2005 but has only resulted in a handful of prosecutions. It allows for the hunting of a fox's scent with dogs but not the killing of the animal.

Brighton Council says residents can clear pavements

This is a difficult one to get your head around, but apparently there had been some concern that residents deciding to clear their pavement of snow could be liable for any accidents that occurred on that stretch.

The rather warped reasoning was that by attempting to help the situation you were thus assuming responsibility and therefore at risk from legal action being taken against you. Incredible! Are we in America?

However, Brighton and Hove City Council has issued a statement advising residents and businesses that it would be unlikely for a legal liability to arise, providing you could show you can helped the situation.

The council states:

While we cannot give categorical legal advice for residents wishing to clear the pavements in their streets, we can say that it is unlikely to give rise to legal liability. Following any accidents, the claimant would need to show that:

the way the householder tried to clear the ice created or made the situation worse
the injury sustained is the result of the actions of the householder and not just snow/ice

Brighton surrogate mum expecting eighth child

A Brighton-based surrogate mum is pregnant for an eighth time, making her one of the UK's most prolific surrogate mothers.

Jill Hawkins, 45, is pregnant for a couple in their 30s, who had had six embryos frozen, two were then transported into Ms Hawkins' womb. It is not yet known if she may be carrying twins.

It is the first time Ms Hawkins, who does not have any children of her own, has carried a child not using her own eggs. The children had been conceived by artificial insemination using the sperm of the father.

She told the Daily Mail: "I love being pregnant. It's a compulsion I suppose and I really miss it when I'm not pregnant."

She added: "It's a new experience this time because they are not my biological children.

"I feel there's not so much pressure on me because it's not my genes. I'm just providing the womb for the baby to grow in."

It has been reported that Ms Hawkins will receive £12,000 in expenses for the pregnancy.

Brighton Snow Update: Wednesday 6th Jan

The snow has, as expected, wreaked havoc in Brighton and Hove today with some heavy snowfall occurring during the morning rush to get to work - for those that attempted it at least.

The minor roads quickly became unpassable, causing at least three ambulances to get stuck. One ambulance spent the entire morning stuck on Langridge Drive in Portslade, blocking the road in the process.

Brighton's buses were forced to suspend their service in the morning and at the time of writing they remain suspended. See the latest news on Brighton's bus service here .

There is also limited rail service in and out of Brighton, but the situation is ever-changing, so visit Southern Railway for the latest information .

The majority of schools and nurseries have also closed, while Brighton University was forced to cancel most lectures this morning.

With the prospect of yet more snow and the likelihood of what has fallen turning to ice overnight the problems are set to continue throughout the week.

2010 Events: Brighton Marathon

Brighton Marathon

On Sunday 19th April 2010, the inaugral Brighton Marathon is due to take place. The newest marathon in the UK will be made up of a route that goes through the city and along the coast, while keeping disruption to a minimum (apparently).

The 26 miles course offers an alternative to the famous London Marathon and is sure to make a great deal of money for charity. One such fundraising scheme includes a Surrey duo who will be tackling the marathon as part of 12 challenges they are involved in on their 'year of pain'. Read more here.

Brighton braced for more snow

The North has been deluged with snow again today and it is possible that our turn will come later this week.

Brighton and Hove City Council, mindful that their handling of the arctic conditions has become a political issue, have issued a warning with details on how they are preparing for difficult weather conditions.

Council leader Mary Mears said: “We are preparing as much as we can. The council has six gritter vehicles for salting the roads, four snow ploughs and a team of drivers on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the winter months. Full gritting routes across the city cover 156 miles, taking in every bus route in Brighton & Hove and there are 350 salt bins on pavements. We are listening to residents and responding.”

Caroline Lucas challenged to be transparent

The Green Party leader, Caroline Lucas, is yet to respond to a call for transparency by Conservative candidate Charlotte Vere.

The two women are competing for the Brighton Pavilion constituency, which is currently held by Labour MP David Lepper. He will not be contesting the seat at the next election, likely to be this summer, so Nancy Platts has been given the task of holding the seat, which at this stage looks unlikely.

As an MEP for the South East England Region, Ms Lucas is subject to the expenses spotlight being turned on her with the matter so much in the public eye following the Westminster revelations in 2009.

Ms Lucas' website has revealed a breakdown of her expenses claimed in 2008, but her conservative opponent has thrown down the gauntlet and demanded full transparency, particularly relating to her travel expenses claims, which may add a while new 'green' element to the story.

Charlotte Vere has laid out her case on her blog and with a subsequent press release, but as of yet there has been no response, described as a 'deafening silence' by Ms Vere this evening.

Back in May on BBC Radio 4, Caroline Lucas said: "We don't need to just deal with the expenses system, awful though that is. We really need a root and branch transformation of our Parliament, so people can feel proud about it again, so that public life is something honourable again - it certainly isn't today - so the whole parliamentary system is alive again. Parliament shouldn't just be something that happens behind closed doors in Westminister."

I am sure it could be argued that European politics shouldn't just be something that happens behind closed doors in Brussels and Strasbourg, where a different expenses system could easily be described as 'awful'.

Ms Lucas clearly felt strongly about a system that she was not involved in, so now that she is involved in a different system she will surely be happy to respond to the scrutiny.

In defence of Brighton and Hove City Council on the gritting debate....

Of couse we all love to belittle the council's efforts at just about everything they do. Recycling, parking and now gritting roads have got us all worked out and demanding to have a councillor strung up as punishment for their sins.

Well, it is true, nothing is perfect and there is always room for improvement, but the fury that has followed the recent cold snap has led me to feel sympathy for Brighton and Hove City Council, which is a strange feeling to have.

The Green Party have been shouting from the frosty roof tops as how "wholly inadequate" the council's response has been to the arctic conditions and demanding an investigation. While, I can accept that a review is wise so that improvements, where possible, can be made for future adverse weather conditions, it is unfair to lay so much stick at the current officials.

Green Party Councillor Ben Duncan has repeatedly discussed the "hundreds of residents who suffered broken bones on the icy pavements" on his blog, suggesting they have been let down by the council.

Firstly, I may be proved wrong, but this figure seems questionable, especially as 100 were supposedly admitted to hospital in one morning alone.

Secondly, what do the Green Party suggest to have done to avert such difficulties? Brighton is a compact area, full of many small side roads, pavements and hills. Before Christmas, there was heavy snow, followed by conditions which led to ice, which is a rarity in southern England, which is used to snow instantly being turned to slush. As a consequence there was ice and people slipped over and some people stayed at home and missed work, or the shops. Until we have a climate that demands hundreds of gritting lorries and an army of helpers this will happen every now and again.

I live on a dead end road that suffered severe ice for roughly a week, but most of my neighbours were clever enough to park on the main road. We would all have loved to see council workers out gritting our road and the pavements, but we are not naive and realise that to have the resources required to carry this out when necessary would incur a huge expense. An expense, that we may have seen worthwhile this winter, but after a number of mild winters the fury at the cost of the unused resources would be just as intense.

From what I could see, the main roads were dealt with and for that I am grateful. Unless The Green Party has invented snow resistant pavements (you may get my vote if you have) could you please remain reasonable with accusations of the council have broken bones in their hands.

Twitter at the forefront of Brighton's political debating

The last 24 hours has delivered an indication of how Twitter will be a battle ground for local politicians during this election year.

The conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion, Charlotte Vere (Twitter ID charlottev), has been challenging her rival for the post, the Green Party leader Caroline Lucas (carolinelucas), over her expenses as an MEP.

Vere started the debate in response to Lucas' relaunched website, saying "New webiste. Very nice. Have you published your expenses on it?", which prompted suggestions that the Brighton constituents deserved to see her expense claims as an MEP. However, it transpired that her expenses for 2008 were available to view, although not in sufficient detail to please Vere.

Being on Twitter, the conversation is rapid and can quickly draw in a crowd, stoking the flames and the risk of being misquoted is high, as is forgetting you are conversing in such a public way. It will be a high stakes game for those politicians wishing to keep such a public profile on Twitter.

Back to the debate, and Vere also mocked the Green Party leader with "I hear you took a taxi in Brighton for a 3 block walk! Real change is what you can achieve, not a fantasy", while the tweets threatened to get serous with a vague suggestion that the Green Party's policies shared similarities with that of the BNP.

Brighton Pavilion is in for a treat in the coming months with a campaign that is set to be high profile, both locally and nationally, with the seat so important for the Greens. Sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

What happened to Brighton's Google Street View?

Back in March the Google Street View car was spotted around the streets of Brighton, but the images are not yet viewable and there is no suggestion of when Brighton will be added to the list of UK cities included in this controversial scheme.

I am sure I'm not the only one anxious to see if my home, car, or even myself are included in the images.

Brightonians to be priced out of living in the city

Recent news of celebrities buying into Brighton and Hove is adding to the concern of locals that they are increasingly being priced out of the city they love.

Employment opportunities remain sparse in the area and the average wage is nothing exceptional, whereas the average house price is high and still growing even in the wake of the property downturn during 2009.

According to Findaproperty.com, the property data site, Brighton was the best performing city in 2009 with an almost 6% rise in average property values to £291,147.

While, www.home.co.uk, states that the average house price of properties currently on the market in Brighton is £329,634. The problem is stark for families with the average price of a 4 bedroom property at the excessive £488,893.

The premium of being in Brighton can be shown by the fall of in excess of £130,000 in the cost of a 4 bedroom house just a few miles down the coast in Worthing.

Much of Hove is now also out of limits to those wishing to work in the city with the average property values well above the national average. However, with the area remaining so desirable there is no suggestion that house prices will fall, or even stay level in 2010.

Petition to save Brighton History Centre gathers pace

It was revealed last month that the Brighton History Centre was facing possible closure, but a petition launched on the Council's website is quickly collecting the names of locals determined to save the museum.

Brighton History Centre, which is described as 'a unique one stop shop for information on local history', is located in the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in Royal Pavilion Gardens, but it could be facing closure as the Council looks to take cost cutting measures.

However, locals are preparing themselves for a fight and have urged residents to add their name to the petition. So far, 208 have added their name since the petition was launched just before Christmas. Click here to view the petition.

The petition states: "The city prides itself on its heritage and exploits it. Heritage and cultural tourism is recognised as a key driver of the city’s economy. Such tourism exists and grows because researchers document and illuminate the heritage, using library resources. The city would be poorer in every sense if the Centre closes."

Brighton's New Year's resolution is to find true love

A study into new year's resolutions has discovered that the number one aspiration for Brighton people in 2010 is to find true love.

Brighton is the only city in the UK that led with the romantic resolution, with most choosing to "enjoy life more" or to "lose weight/go on a diet".

The nationwide survey was carried out by CitySocialising, who polled 4000 members and discovered that 73% will be making at least one resolution - 17% choosing to do so for the first time.

The survey also found that the concept appealed more to women than to men. Then men were, however, more keen on finding true love than their female counterparts.

While getting fit featured highly on the list it turns out that few people are motivated to quit smoking or drink less in 2010.

Sanchita Saha, founder of CitySocialising, said: “It’s surprising that after such a tough economic year, “saving money” and “paying off debts” didn’t come higher on people’s list of resolutions. However, it’s great news that simply enjoying life more is the number one resolution, as having fun and making the most of things is what life is all about, regardless of how much you weigh or how much money you have."

Brighton's Council plan bike counting machines

No, it is not April 1st, this is apparently a true story, but for the life of me I have no idea what the point is.

Brighton and Hove City Council is planning to install large machines in Brighton and Hove for the purpose of counting cyclists. Why? Nobody knows. What is wrong with getting pensioners to sit around with notepads like the good old days?

The move is apparently funded by the European Union and Cycling England and Brighton will be the first city in England to have the counters installed.

The locations are, according to The Argus, opposite the Grand Hotel, the east side of the A23, at the edge of Surrenden Park and along the A270 Lewes Road.

Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion Charlotte Vere described the news as leaving her 'speechless' and she is not the only one left scratching her head.

You can expect to see the machines in place from March 2010, when hopefully we'll be told what the point is.

Millionaires snap up Brighton houses in 2009

Despite the recession and uncertainty in the housing market 2009 saw 12 homes purchased above the £1million mark.

However, this figure is down from 17 properties that sold for seven figures in 2008.

The most expensive house purchase of 2009 saw a property on Roedean Crescent exchange hands for more than £2.25m.

One of the exclusive beach-side homes at Western Esplanade was sold for £1.6m, while another is expected to go through early in 2010 after Little Britain star David Walliams agreed a fee with the vendors.

The usual suspects in Hove also appear on the list with 4 properties on the exclusive Dyke Road/Dyke Road Avenue exchanging hands for more than £1m.

However, a number of homes in the £3m region have remained unsold throughout 2009, such as the giant Dyke Road Avenue property pictured below.

Not Dead Enough: Three Murders. One Suspect. No Proof By Peter James

Brighton-based author Peter James has claimed top spot for the most loaned book at Brighton's libraries during 2009.

His crime thrillers based on fictional Brighton detective Roy Grace were lapped up by readers with his book Not Dead Enough claiming top spot and Dead Man's Footsteps coming in fifth place.

The lists, which show Brighton's wide range of musical and film tastes, have been released by Brighton & Hove City Council, which might be a shock to some of you that didn't know people still used libraries.

Councillor David Smith, Brighton & Hove City Council's cabinet member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: "It is fascinating to see what the most popular items are - I'm sure the fact that Peter James' books are set in Brighton adds to their appeal with local readers, but I don't think there is a particular reason why Amy Winehouse topped the music list!"

Brighton Pub Review: Ye Olde King and Queen

This iconic pub overlooking the Old Steine is probably Brighton's biggest pub and has become the number one venue for sports fans in the city.
Watching a football match in the King and Queen is second only to being in the ground for atmosphere - you are guaranteed noise, banter and (usually) friendly rivalry amongst opposing supporters for the big games (Champions League games and England internationals in particular).
However, this is a pub with history and is decorated as such. It was built in 1779 as a farmhouse in honour of then then King George III and Charlotte. The adjoining Tudor Room, which has hosted many banquettes in its time, was originally the venue for Brighton's Corn Exchange.
The pub boasts a delightful paved courtyard, a vast menu, pool tables and the longest bar in the City.
Of course, the famed flooding toilets just add to the charm of the place, although this is a venue unsuited for a romantic date, but for watching football I can't think of anywhere better!

Having highlighted Charlotte Vere, the Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion, it has emerged in an ICM poll that the Green Party holds a strong lead in this constituency.

The Greens, who are hoping to win their first seat at next year's general election, hold a 10 point lead over Labour and 8 over the Conservatives, according to an ICM telephone opinion poll.

Candidate Caroline Lucas said: “Brighton is a special place and its voters are impatient for a fresh, independent voice to represent them in Westminster. I believe I am offering them that.

David Walliams joins Hove's Millionaires

Little Britain star David Walliams is set to become the latest celeb to move to the exclusive properties on the Western Esplanade in Hove.

Walliams is said to have had his £1.85m offer accepted, which is roughly £100,000 below the listed asking price for the beachside property, which is hidden away on a private road near to Hove Lagoon.

Known locally as Millionaires’ Row, his neighbours include Norman Cook and Zoe Ball, Heather Mills and Nick Berry, while Walliams will find the quick access to the English Channel handy should he wish to swim over to France again.

This is because a terraced house at Lewes Crescent in Brighton, which was previously owned by Blanchett, has come on the market for the eye-watering £3.1m fee.
